About Me

I am Sarah Fluck - an independent multimedia journalist with a focus on politics and security dynamics in Africa's Great Lakes Region.
auf Deutsch

I am an independent multimedia journalist covering the Great Lakes region’s politics, conflict and security topics. I’m based in Kampala, Uganda, and have mainly reported from the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Kenya and Burundi.

A pinch of Prättigau stubbornness

A native of tiny Prättigau village (rumour has it the last Swiss village to get electricity!), I was raised in a family that moved frequently throughout Switzerland. I’ve moved over 30 times since I was a baby.

Travels and humanitarian efforts in developing countries in my youth shaped my worldview and sharpened my awareness of the real challenges of modern, globalized society. As a secondary school teacher, I always sought innovative ways to positively impact my immediate environment. My passion for telling people’s stories eventually led me to the media.

In 2015, I completed my bachelor’s degree in communication at the ZHAW-IAM in Winterthur. To further develop my journalistic craft, I started a two-year traineeship at the Swiss daily Tages-Anzeiger and the Sunday paper SonntagsZeitung in 2016. At the same time, I took part in the practice-oriented diploma course in journalism at the MAZ in Lucerne. I deepened my knowledge of African politics during my master’s degree at SOAS in London from 2019 to 2020.
